Shiny and new - Thematic Photographic 249

Carmi's theme for us this week is Shiny and New.
The first thing I thought of was a mall - more particularly, the GPO mall in central Melbourne. The old building has been made super-shiny, and given a new look to suit all of its fashionable boutiques and cafés.

I walked through early one morning, before the stores were open:

Speaking of shining...

  1. Lovely shiny photos - is that mall really so metallic? And how did you manage to be there before it opened?

    Great photos, as usual.

    1. Thank you Gilly.
I guess it's more of an arcade than what we normally think of as a mall. The building was the old General Post Office, and goes right through the block from one street to another. The external entrances are open around 8.30, but none of the shops open until 10.00.

  2. I am not really a fan of shiny and new - but before it opens would be the only way to enjoy it. I do however, love Pink Floyd. Great post - thank you.

    1. Thanks EC. You're right, it's a very industrial look and to my mind doesn't suit the husk of the old building.

  3. Look at all those fancy shops! I bet you could put a big dent in your credit card pretty quickly.

I love that Pink Floyd song, too.

    1. Sure could, thunder. It's a good thing the shops WERE shut!

  4. Thank you for the music memory! I enjoy walking the mall before the stores open their doors too. Especially the Mall of America. The statue is quite interesting and I'll go back and study it again. I think you posted another interesting statue from possibly here, that also caught my attention. The artwork in places like this are always most pleasing. Great shiny and new, you pulled it off!

    1. Thanks for those kind words, Karen. The statue in this case is actually a group of display mannequins. I liked them, though!

  5. Shiny, shiny, shiny! Great photos of modern shopping malls, though we may object to their impact on individual shops and downtown areas, they are interesting places to visit. Not a fan of Pink Floyd but this number isn't bad. Thank you Alexia

    1. Too much shine, in my opinion, Michèle. But it certainly made me take lots of shots!
      Thank you for your comment.

  6. That's how I like to see a mall - shiny and empty so I don't get dragged into the shots. Makes a good photo venue.

    1. I agree Bob. People tend to ruin places like that, I think!
